There are only 100mb cards in the Solaris servers, actually it's only 1 nfs mount i want to do at the moment.

We currently dont back this data up as it takes too long.

This is just a stop gap i am proposing till i can get my Veritas setup done, but this is waiting for another project to finish.

I want to mount this volume direct from the NAS to a hp server, so the sun server should not be affected.

Both servers are on different lans as the NAS has multple nics.

Is it possible to have more then one instance of fbackup running the the same time?

I was just wondering if you had 2 or more tape drives attached to a server, with say nfs mounts from different servers, if you could backup up different nfs mounts to different drives at the same time?

Yes you can.

Though, NFS mounts should be backed up from the owning server not a client.

live free or die
harry d brown jr

I'm thinking of backing up some data directories that are on a NAS but owned by a couple of solaris servers.

I wanted to use fbackup to backup this data as my hp servers have gigabit cards.

It would make life easier for test restore as my dedicated setup is all hp based.

I was wondering about ownership & permission issues so i'll have to see what i can do about that.

Uhh, but do your Solaris servers have GB cards? What you're proposing is to copy the data over the network *twice* before you put it to tape. If your Sun boxes have dedicated connections to the NAS, then this may be fair enough, otherwise you're *killing* your network and NFS performance on the Sun server to do this.

*IF* you decide to go ahead with this anyway, then I'd highly recommend 2xGB interfaces in the Sun, one connecting directly to the NAS, and the other serving NFS.
