Hi experts:

I have a very strange problem. A few users are unable to login from Windows using the ftp client. The message is
530 Login Incorrect
Login failed.
ftp>

The really strange part is that they can telnet with no problems. I also had one of these users try ftping from another HP-UX system and that worked. My ftp server is running HPUX 11i and the PC are running a mixture of Windows 2000 and XP.

Any ideas because I am stumped.

TIA,
Bob
I asked my psychic, Miss Cleo, and she sees a leading "-" in the 'bad' users passwords.

If one of your users had the password "-secret" ask them to try this on the Windows FTP login: "--secret". The client is eating the "-" so feed it another one.

Of course, Miss Cleo could be wrong.
Do you have /etc/shells file in place?? If not put one. Get it from /usr/newconfig/etc/ dir. Else prepare one with sheels that are users using. Like

/usr/bin/ksh
/usr/bin/sh
/sbin/sh

Anil

If I am reading the question correctly, it's only a few users who can't ftp from Windows when they can ftp from HP-UX ftp clients. /etc/shells will not explain that behavior. I'll stick with Miss Cleo's answer.
Thanks guys! Clay, please tell Miss Cleo that she was 100% correct! Using 2 dashes allowed them to login from Windows.

Thanks again,
Bob
