Very interesting. This was sort of discussed in another post about how under HP-UX 11 SD searches for your CDROM when you start swinstall or swcopy but under 10.20 it does not. I guess HP changed it under 11 to make it easier to find the local CD drive as some people were having problems under 10.20, as you are.

Firstly, check your local CD drive is claimed and the only one there. Do the following command as root;
ioscan -fknCdisk | grep CD

This should list a single claimed device, eg;

disk     19  10/12/5.2.0  sdisk       CLAIMED   DEVICE    TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-4101TA

If you have more than 1 CD then this may explain the problem, or if it is not claimed.

If you mount the CD before you go into swinstall or swcopy or swremove then it should always be listed as a source, is this so ? ie. mount /dev/dsk/cxxxxx /SD_CDROM before running your swxxx command.
HP-UX VERSION 10.20
When using swinstall i am not given the option of using /SD_CDROM as an installation source for software.However, when i stop and restart
swagentd,and then go back into swinstall ,I can select the local cdrom as a source for software installation.This seems to happen every time I attemp to install software,even after rebooting the machine.

Any ideas ?
Has swagentd become corrupted ?

Many thanks

Michael.
Have you installed the latest patches for Software-distributor for 10.20. According to the Dec 2000 patch bundle they are;

PHCO_20209
I think you should try to invoke swinstall with the "-s" (source) option. This would allow you to choose the source from the command line:

# swinstall -s /SD_CDROM

Carsten
