can any one help me to safe my server from destroing

hi every one .....
i want to describe what i want to do ...
i have this server"HP-UX SERVER B.11.11 U 9000/800" and i want to install oracle 9i ,to install it i need to install some of patches to system to be ready ,i am listen from some beady many of warring about the problem that incorrect patches makes in the system , for that i need to safe my system from destroying ,can any one help me to do that with easer method and how can i restore it if it destroy "it is big problem".
note : i don't have tape drive but i have R/W DVD .

Hi,

you can install the patches from the HP support plus cd or you can download standard patch bundles from this link. Do remember this may not have some latest patch that were released after the bundle was released.

Or you can do a patch analysis of your system and then download the patches or download a ftp script that will download and build a patch depot which you can use to install the patches.

You may still have to download / install a patch or two that may be specific to the version of application / oracle you are installing. The documentation for the oracle install will probably list the patches you may need.

1) Back up your key data first.

2) If you have a spare disk, install and boot off of that disk instead of your current disk.

but i did not have any knowledge with any method of backup ...
How can i do a backup for my system first step by step??

How can do analysis for any patch that will be install.??

You should use Ignite/UX to take a full backup of the server. As you say you don't have a tape drive you will need to do this over the LAN to another HPUX server (I assume you have more than one).

An Ignite/UX backup is the only way to have true full recovery.

Make sure you have installed the latest pax patch first (PHCO_30420 is the latest recommended): -

Bear in mind that this is more work as you have no tape drive - you will need to setup the other HPUX server as an Ignite server, which you wouldn't have to do if you had a tape drive.

Hi Mohamed,

If you go into the itrc.hp.com, there is an option for the patch/firmware database, in which you can enter a patch name, and it will come back giving you the selected patch name, the recommended patch, and the latest patch. If you're not sure, go for the recommended patch.

I think you might be overly concerned about the patches, in general there are critical warnings in patches or new problems introduced, but if you check your patches though the patch database you should be fine.

To backup your system, if you have a tape drive on the system you could create an Ignite backup onto tape. If worst comes to the worst you can then boot from the Ignite tape and restore your system to where it was when you took the backup. Check the Ignite manuals (docs.hp.com) for details.

Oop, sorry, missed that you don't have a tape drive. Do a network ignite backup instead then, if you have another server you can use to put the Ignite image onto.

Another method, if you have mirrored root disks then you could use lvsplit to split the mirrored logical volumes off. You can then patch freely, knowing you can reinstate the "split" logical volumes if you require.

sorry .... but i don't have anather hp server on network .....and i dont have a tape drive ...dose any one help my to backup the important files or folders that may be effected when the wrong patch is istalled ,dose any one known these files???
How can i test the patch it's does not effect my system..???

Okay - you need HP-UX dvd+rw-tools:

Also you will need a ReWritable DVD (get more then 1).

Then you can backup files to the DVD...

yes i have dvd R/w but how can i do a backup through it.

You can use the growisofs command to write to the dvd:

Example:

growisofs -Z /dev/rdsk/c#t#d# -r -U -max-iso9660-filenames /etc

overwrites media contents with the content of /etc

growisofs -M /dev/rdsk/c#t#d# -r -U -max-iso9660-filenames /tmp

adds the content of /tmp to media, intermixed with the previously existing content

What is the files that i should backup in my system , or there is a command can make a full backup to my system in my DVD R/W.

Well - what to backup - just about everything...though it might not fit on the same dvd...

Do a bdf - look at the file systems...

if total is less then 5.7 GB, then do all of /

You will want at least:

/etc
/sbin
/stand
/home
/opt
/usr
/var

Hi Mohammed,

You can try "growisofs -Z /dev/rdsk/c#t#d# -r -U -max-iso9660-filenames /"

This will backup everything under root directory, the entire system. You will still of course need to reinstall your OS and then copy over necessary files from the DVD.....with ignite you wouldnt need that step....

Make sure you have enough space though, with a bdf or df -k

Should be in /usr/local/bin:

/usr/local/bin/growisofs

if you installed the package:

DVD_RW-TOOLS_5.18_HP-UX_B.11.11_32+64.depot
