Jerry,

I believe there is a later tar patch which enabled file sizes up to 8gb. At 11.11, make sure you have tar patch PHCO_26423 or later. Outside of that, gnu tar allows for larger files as well.

HTH,
Eric

How big is the /u01/oradata/openrpt/rptdb01.dbf file? If it is larger than 8Gb, you cannot use tar. The problem is that tar (cpio, pax, etc) are industry standard tools and they (natively) cannot store interchangeable headers for files larger than 2Gb. If you add the patch for tar (and/or pax), the header is modified to allow up to 8Gb, but no more. There simply isn't enough room in the header for larger file sizes yet remain readable by other versions of tar or cpio. Even a file between 2Gb and 8Gb cannot be restored on another system unless there is a special version of tar that can handle the special header.

If the file is larger than 8Gb, classic Unix tools cannot be used. You'll need to use fbackup or a commercial backup utility. As with the 8Gb tar patch, both systems must be running compatible backup/restore programs. All versions of fbackup starting with HP-UX 10.20 can handle large files.

Type these 2 commands:

whence -v tar
what $(whence tar)

The first command will show you the location of the tar command when you use it without a full pathname. The second reports the 'what string' found inside the program. You should see "PATCH_11.11 (PHCO_28992)" as part of the tar.c what string. If not, you're not running the patched version of tar. Normally, tar is found in /usr/bin, but if you don't refer to tar as /usr/bin/tar, you will get whatever program is found in your current $PATH.
