You should use install and upgrade guide. This can be found here : http://docs.hp.com/en/oshpux11i.html#Installing%20and%20Updating

It depends on your install, but cold install is generally prefered from upgrade. With vgexport/vgimport and restoration, you can get data back after install.

As Fred said, the cold install seems to be the preferred choice in general, but upgrading can also work, I've heard of particular systems that this was done with successfully. As I understand once you follow it step by step it should be ok.

These are the steps

1) Get DVD's to upgrade from hp OR download from HP

2) Make ignite, OS/App backups, other backups or get Ready to pack-up and leave

3) Upgrade your firmware

4) Get the latest update-ux this will allow you to go from one version to another. This is a must

5) Read the Guides for your satisfaction
