We are attaching the Sun DDS4 tape drive to a HPUX 11i machine. We got no output when running ioscan -funC tape and lsdev |grep stape. We also rebooted the box after the tape drive attached. What should we do to make the machine recognite the tape drive? Please specific the steps. Thank you.

I'm not sure a Sun DDS4 drive will work with HP.

However, try gathering the following info.
1 - Find out the H/W path of the device SLOT, e.g. 0/2/0/0

then do

ioscan -fknH 0/2/0/0

See what devices are registered on this path?

Regards

Tim

Hi,

Check if you have the tape2 driver with the IN state.

you can check it via SAM -> Kernel configuration -> drivers. If "Curent status" is OUT, you can put it IN selecting the line tape2 with your space bar and then go to Actions -> Add driver(s) to kernel.

Be aware that this action will request you to reboot your system since it needs to process new kernel, although you can defer the change.

Thank you for all replies. However, the ioscan -funC tape and lsdev |grep stape commands still does not show anything although I changed tape2 from OUT to IN, created the new kernel and rebooted the box. Everything was done by sam.

Hi Anh.
Firstly. Check SCSI terminator and SCSI cable (connect from tape to back panel of server). Can you give me your current diagram. which tape driver do you use (DS5300 is most popular in Vietnam)
HTH
p/s: pls assign point to each solution.
tienna

The problem is fixed by adding the tape drive through sam - Peripheral devices - tape drives - Action - Add. After that it will reboot the box, but will stop at halt state. You need to power off and on again. Remember that time the tape drive need to turn on.
