port 25 in the mail port. When you telnet <HOST> 25 you connect to the port that sendmail is listening to.

Appears you can connect to port 25. This is one way of watching the mail being sent and what the responses are from the server.

Lots of good info on www.sendmail.org that can help diagnosis the problem.</HOST>

There are a number of things that might have happened. Check your mail.log file for any more details. It would be nice to know if the problem is confined to one destination, just within or just outside your company, etc. It's possible that your mailserver has been blakballed. There are not enough data.

Port 25 is the smtp (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol); it is the port on which the sendmail daemon listens for incoming mail.

Can you send an email to something like a @yahoo.com email address (provided you are not working for yahoo) as an external address ? And does it arrive in a reasonable time ?

Is your progress program trying to send an attachment ? Especially larger than 1MB as most mail hosts are deferring the delivery of mail with large attachments to conserve bandwidth

I am assuming tawinc.com is an external email address relative to the source of this email. Can you really verify that this "ldaugher" id still exists as a registered user. I have seen too many messages in the past cloggin up the mail queues because the person left a job without updating his/her email subscriptions to many places.

Last but not the least, check around the email blacklists (like spamhaus.org) to see if your site is known as a spammer. Someone may have left a mailrelay open inadvertantly, which may have been exploited by spammer enough to get you on to one or more of those blacklists.

There are too many reasons for the rejection .
1. The remote host may not be running any SMTP daemons . Try telnet tawinc.com 25 and check whether u r able to connect , if u r not getting any prompt and getting the same message that means the remote smtp server is running the smtp daemon.
2. The remote server may have blocked the smtp connections from ur server . If it is an outside server ( not in ur company ) then this may not be the cause.
3. If the domain tawinc.com is not in ur domain and ur server is not able to resolve the mx record of the domain tawinc.com then ur server will try to directly connect to the host tawnic.com in case it is able to resolve only the host name ( not the mx record ) and that host may not be the mail server for that domain .

Just now i checked the mx record of tawnic.com and there is two mx records , that means ur server is not trying to use the mx record or it is a temporary dns pblm.
Try connecting to the server cluster2.us.messagelabs.com which is the mail server for the domain tawnic.com to the port 25.
