Hi yogeeraj,
I dont quite understand your request, what is your aim? changing the server or the bay (since you are talking of VA..) maybe both?
Could you explain the:
Eight 2-Gb Fibre Channel host-side connections
Four 2-Gb* Fibre Channel drive-side connections
I didnt get it should I understand 2X2connections to 4 separate switches each connected to the bay via 1 dedicated fiber?
What bay do you have?

All the best
Victor

Dear experts!

For my next purchase, i would like to get the system that gives me the best IO.

The primary purpose of the system will be to host an Oracle Database used by an OLTP application.

My current system is an RP5430 with a SAN which have the following performance characteristics:
Maximum sustained I/O rate from cache 11,800 I/O per sec
Maximum sustained I/O rate from media 4,600 I/O per sec
Maximum sustained transfer rate from media 170 MB/sec

and
Host/drive connections
======================
Eight 2-Gb Fibre Channel host-side connections
Four 2-Gb* Fibre Channel drive-side connections

14 x 36GB FC disks (in which the usable area which far more than i will need in 5 years!!)

I have read a bit about the VAs.
which HP products will be giving me the optimum performance at a reasonable price?

thanking you in advance for your replies.

kind regards
yogeeraj

hi victor!

thank you for your reply.

these are details of my current system. I want to acquire new hardware so that i improve on what i have, especially performance at the storage level.

I have the alternative to purchase the same SAN as mention above for go for something better. I would like to go for HP.

I have read a bit on the following models:
HP StorageWorks Virtual Array 7110 and and 7410.

hope this clarifies my points above.

regards
yogeeraj

Well, what about considering using an XP128 or XP48 if the other is too expensive in replacement of the actual storage?
http://www.hp.com/products1/storage/products/disk_arrays/highend/xp128/specs.html

This will garantee you I suppose one of the best I/O performance bay side in such a way if you do have some I/O issues you will have to look at switches/server side, now to get the best throughput after would be NOT aggregating luns but to add say 4 LUNS per vg (or 8) and stripe across 4 FCs if this isnt enough do it x2 (another VG with 4 more FC ).

If you want to garantee yourself a max I/O then dont share your bandwidth through switches use dedicated fibres straight to the bay, with already 4 dedicated fibers you should have quite some performance and with 8...
Dont forget to get enough cache for the bay (16GB..)

Now you should have something great...

All the best
Victor
