We are realatively new HP-UX users converting from HP3000 world and do not have a printer directly connected to our HP9000/RP7420 running version 11.11. I would like to know how to configure a network printer as LP. Is this possible?

If the printer is already connected to network
with an Ip_address then use sam to configure it.

sam ..> Printers &Plotters ..> LP Spooler..> Printers & Plotters ...> Actions > Add Remote Printer.

-USA..

Yes, the easiest way is to use the JetAdmin software. Inside there, you can just specify the IP or resolved nodename of the printer and it pretty much handles it from there.

We have this printer added as mis_lp, but how do we designate this as being seen as default LP printer?

you can set the ENV variable LPDEST in the users .profile to set the detault printer or execute the command lpadmin -d printername.

Since you are running 11.11, you won't be running jetadmin, you'll run hppi as the non-SAM command to add an true network printer with an HP JetDirect interface card. The term network printer can be confused with a server-based printer on another computer which is called a remote printer. So if the printer has an HP JetDirect LAN interface, then configure it as a network printer (and use SAM, it's easier). If the printer is connected to a non-HP LAN card or on another server, use the SAM term: remote printer.

As far as a default printer, you can change this at anytime. Just run the command:

lpadmin -dprintername

Notice: no spaces after -d

Now that being said, do you have several printers configured on this system? If so, have a default printer means a *lot* of misdirected printout. The reason is that if people are used to just typing: lp file_name, and nothing happens, they invariably type the again, and again, hoping that the printer next to them will start doing something. Instead, the printer around the corner is spewing all these jobs because it is the default.

So use lpadmin -d
to eliminate any default, and as mentioned, set the variable LPDEST to the printer you'd like to use as a default for your login. This is done in your .profile file.

Hi Dan

There are two ways to configure network printer in hpux:

1. Through SAM add remote printer
2. HP Jet Admin utility which is replaced by hpnpi ( hp network printer installer). This is preferred option. Utility is available by default.
