what does it say when you try to run it? It should say if you don't have permission it can't find the file or something. Does it complain or just do nothing at all?

are you on a remote system when you exectute it (like telnet in from a workstation)? It may be starting on the server and you do not have the display set right, so you don't see anything. If telnet in, use "export DISPLAY=workstation:0" where workstation is the local machine name.

Mark

exporting the display is pretty much the first thing I do, what's happening is that sam is coming up, but it stays at the 'Initializing Sam...' and never brings up the initial menu..

Hi Michael,

is it possible that someone else is running sam already?

Try to give it a clean start by killing all open sam windows first.

Check with ps -ef if you see a hung sam process somewhere

Steffi Jones

If you're trying to bring up the GUI version, you need to be sure an do an 'xhost machine_name' (where machine_name is the name of the machine you are logging into to run SAM) or 'xhost +' on your local machine.

I think I spoke with Mike and we fixed it. Looked in /var/sam/log/samlog and it was attempting to build NIS+ maps. However the box was removed from NIS environment but nis+ deamons were still running.

Mike fixed it by stopping NIS+. Also patch PHNE_17200 addresses SAM hang w/ NIS+ at 11.0
