I was told it could be used to reset an I/O card ? This would help prevent a system reboot. I went to
sam -> peripherial devices -> cards
and viewed under "state" of some cards "not OLAR able" assuming the others "are OLAR able"?

Please advise,
Thanks
Jerry Sims
Hi Jerry,

as already mentioned OLAR is Online Addition and Replacement. It is intended for adding or replacing IO Cards while the OS is running. You will need redundant cards (e.g. a second fibre channel path to an array) as prerequisite. But there are some nice tools in OLAR.

PS:
Only very brave (or crazy) persons are trying to replace cards in a running N4000
;-))

Well Torsten, there is only one way to find out...

I have been using OLAR to change deffect HBA cards on a RP5450 (L2000) online (Production box)...
OK the guys from HP were next to me, but that is they have the new card!
I showed them it was just a question of FAITH...( I trust HP more than them?)

Till now I never had any trouble and I dont see why because (normally) it does power off /on the slot no?
But we agree: To be used only on OLAR able cards!!

All the best
Victor

Whether a card can be managed using OLAR tools is determined by both the specific card and server and slot, check card and server docs to see.

For an overview of OLAR on 11iv2, see the Interface Card OL* Support Guide document at:
http://www.docs.hp.com/en/B2355-90862/B2355-90862.pdf
or
http://www.docs.hp.com/en/B2355-90862/index.html

This document provides an overview of the various methods of managing IO cards using command line, GUI, and attention buttons.

It can be found on docs.hp.com in various locations, one of which 11iv2 System Administration.
