Hi Shiv,

HP OpenView Storage Data Protector is the backup software.

Yes Omniback and Data protector are the same. Until version 4.1 it was called OmniBack. From version 5.0 it is called Data protector.

We use Data protector to backup our databases, file systems and various applications on to Ultrium-LTO tapes and it works fine.

IA

Omniback is earlier version of HP Backup Software, this omniback version ended with omniback 4.1 and after this it has been replaced by Data Protector that bundled in HP Openview. You can also using the third party software such as Legato Networker.

HP Dataprotector (formerly known as Omniback), Symantec (formely of Veritas) Netbackup, and EMC (formerly of Legato) Networker are most commonly used backup software on HPUX platform. I am not sure if there are any studies made to show which one is the msot widely used one but functionality-wise, they are more or less tha same thing.

Hi Shiv,

HP Omniback earlier, now with new name Storage Data protector is matured backup software on HPUX env. Not only for HPUX it is meant for heterogenous environment backup management.

As compare to other Backup Management software, it is very user freindly.
It is having feature's of ONE BUTTON DISASTER RECOVERY(Windows), Online backup support for Oracle like RDBMS.

Just an example of HP-ISO company using Omniback, managing near 3000 users desktop and thousands of Servers.

Regards,
Rajesh

Hi,

Retention (some vendors uses the word Protection instead) is the time a backup is protected .

Data Protector uses two kinds of protection, Data and Catalog. Data protection is how long the media is protected from overwriting. Catalog protection is how long the information about the data on the media is keept in the database.

Expired protection does not mean that the data is unaviable. As long as the data is not overwritten, it is possible to retrive the data from the media (you may need to inport the data or catalog again).

Hi,

Three main backup softwares used wordwide irrespective on platform are

1. HP's Data Protector (Old name Omniback)
2. IBM Tivoli
3. Veritas Netbackup (Now Symantec Netbackup as Symantec took over Veritas)

I suppose DP should be used maximum for HPUx systems. The main reason being from the same vendor.Still I only have working experience on Data Protector so can not really differentiate in the three. Still I think the functionality of the three should be similar only.

HTH,
Devender
