I guess you may have a bad LIF area on your mirror bootdisk, you need to use HPUX install media to boot the server into Recovery shell, there has an option allows you to select "Recover an unbootable HP-UX system".

Simon
Horace,

If it is well mirrored then it is bootable.

I you reboot the server execute the following

=> Press any key to continu
=> bo alt
=> Interact with IPL : Y
=> hpux -lq

If this doesn't work you have to check your alternate bootpath, with option SEA you can find this.

Hi Horace,

I assume somebody mirrored the disk in an incorrect way. If the disks are mirrored, both have to be bootable.

Bad luck. If there is no bootarea on the disk, no chance to make it bootable without deleting the data.

I hope you have a good ignite backup.

I think Simon idea has to be considered but i need more clarification

At this stage i have the second disk which could not boot by giving an error of exec failed. even when i sea for bootable devices, it could not see it.

So now, Simon, you are suggesting that, i should leave this non bootable disk in the system, boot from HP-UX installation media and go to Recovery shell. I will get an option of "Recover an unbootable HP-UX system". This should make my disk bootable. is that it? please correct me if am wrong

thanks

**IF** there is a bootarea on that disk, this might work. But if there is no bootarea, you will destroy your data.

If you have a good ignite backup, replace the bad disk with a good one and restore the backup.

Hi Horace,

It seems your 2nd disk is not mirrored properly , else it would have boot as specified by the command ,
i.e
after interupting the boot process

boot alt [ or boot alt_boot_path ]

Interact with ISL Press Y

hpux -lq
----------

And it seems you have to recover from the Ignite tape. Good luck.

Cheers,
Raj.

It's not easy to work without an OS.

If you don't like the ignite recovery method (I don't know why), you can try to boot the install media and run the recovery shell. Load the "lifls" command and run

lifls -v /dev/rdsk/cxtxdx

with the current device file.
If there is an error message like "not a lif volume" you have no bootarea.
