server replication

G'Day All,

I know I am asking an open-ended question, but here goes.

We currently have a production HP-UX 11.11 server, and have just installed a DR server that is connected remotely to us via a 2mb link.

What I have been asked to review is a method or methods by which we may be able to been the DR server in sync with production. Several methods have come to light, but not much in the way of real world solutions.

Any help in this direction would be appreciated.

Our main production database is universe, if that help.

Ignite is the way to go.

It is specifically designed to replicate vg00 server configuration.

Ignite can not get good copies of production databases while they are open and running. For this you need a tool designed to replicate the database or some kind of hot backup that goes regularly to DR.

For DB replication and if u have oracle DB, oracle 9 has the feature of oracle dataguard replication. It replicates the archive logs generated at primary database to the DR site. DR site the DB need to be in standby mode. But the 2 mb link is not sufficient if u have a big database.

Do you just need to sync some files/filesystems obce a day?

If so then something like rdist (man rdist) or rsync ( http://hpux.connect.org.uk/hppd/hpux/Networking/Admin/rsync-2.6.4/ )will provide what you need although it won't handle databases etc.

If you need something that is passing every changed block of data immediately over the network to the other system then you are either looking at disk array based replication which I doubt any vendor will support over a mere 2Mb link, or host based volume replication using a product like veritas volume replicator ( http://www.veritas.com/Products/www?c=product&refId=3 ), but again you may be constrained by your narrow pipe.

As others have mentioned, if waht you want to replicate is actually in a database, much better to use the databases built-in replication tools.
