I think that preventive maintenance is reacting before happens.

Keep updated the system with latest patchs and firmware levels.

Use a software monitoring to verify the status of the filesystems, avoid a file system full situation.

Use a software tool to verify the status of the system, like webes:

PM is as its name, to maintain system state available for all time for customers.
in PM Hardware and Software status should be checked. one more thing is imp to take latest backup of system.

In addition to the above you may also want to run mstm and run the Tools Verify urtility on the hardware to check for increasing errors on disks, memory etc. Check the /var/adm/syslog for signs of errors. If connected to a UPS, periodically disconect the power to the UPS at planned times with nobody on the system to ensure it works correctly. Housekeep files like utmp wtmp an a periodic basis to prevent them from getting too large.
