We upgraded our HP-UX "in-place" from 11.11 to 11.23.

Now PowerPath won't work.

The EMC SAC is telling us that the correct procuedure would have been:
1. Uninstall PP 4.3.1.
2. Upgrade.
3. Reinstall PP 4.3.1.

Has anybody done this? Is that how you did it?

We tried uninstalling PP on HP-UX 11.23 and that seemed to work. We then installed a new PP 4.3.1 on HP-UX 11.23, and that FAILED. The kernel panics on boot.

Apparently, once you "upgrade-ux", the PowerPath is just irretrievably hosed, and you have to go back to your Ignite Image of HP-UX 11.11, and then:
1. Uninstall PP 4.3.1.
2. Upgrade
3. Reinstall PP 4.3.1.

We're trying that today.

Hi Stuart,

I'm interested to know the workaround given by EMC regarding PP431 on HP-UX 11.23. Please send it to ctpestano@smart.com.ph or through this thread.

Will be doing a similar upgrade soon.

Best regards,
Chris

Christian:

The appropriate upgrade path if you are upgrading your HP-UX in-place from 11.11 to 11.23 is:
1. Uninstall PP 4.3.1 from HP-UX. (swremove)
2. Upgrade
3. Install PP 4.5.1

This is essential. The HP Upgrade In-place process doesn't do well with "foreign stuff" in the kernel.

Don't bother with PP 4.3.X. There are problems with 4.3.X on 11.23 (PA-RISC).

Go to PP 4.5.1, which consists of the base 4.5.0 install and a patch to 4.5.1. You can put both PPs in one depot and install with one reboot.

Don't just install 4.5.0. There are problems with HP-UX if you have schgr or ssfrc in your kernel.

One more thing: make sure that you download/acquire the PP 4.5.X that is specifically made for 11.23 PA-RISC. There are now multiple PPs for specific HP-UXs.
