Hello Gurus,
I have to perform a particular task in which i want to share a windows directory with hp-ux server in real time. This directory should be available to hp-ux all the time.I am planning to use samba service here in the following way .I will share a directory from hp-ux machine with the windows machine. The files which will be written in this directory by the windows machine can be accessed by hp-ux machine.Few are my questions.
1)Will it be practical to use samba in this way as the server will be production machine
2) There is a firewall between windows 2003 server and hp-ux server. Will samba work in this arrangement.
3) Please tell the best procedure for this .
Ciao
Bhushan

1) Yes. Where I work there are a number of cross shares between hp-ux, linux and Windows. There are some annoying obstacles to overcome.
2) Yes, but the firewall will require modification. Ports 137 139 and perhaps 545 will have to be open for Samba to operate through a firewall. Note that if this opens up exposure to the public Internet it should not be done. Samba is based on CIFS and thats what windows is based on and there are a lot of worms that create spurious samba requests, clogging systems, eating bandwidth and filling up log files.

3) Procedure.

Decide what server will be master of the domain. This is usually windows now but hp-ux can be the PDC or primary domain controller.

The hp-ux machine will need a machine account, a login and it will need to issue a samba command to join the domain.

This thread shows how to join a Linux/Windows machine to a Windows domain:
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=479151

Then its just a matter of planning your shares and deciding how hp-ux will access windows shares and how windows will access hp-ux shares.

A few reference docs:
http://www1.itrc.hp.com/service/james/dispDoc.do?docURL=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.hp.com%2Fredirect.html%3Furl%3Dhttp%253A%2F%2Fdocs.hp.com%2Fen%2FB8725-90021%2Fch02s02.html%26qt%3D%2BCIFS%2F9000%26hit%3D2&aid=SEARCH_MANUAL&pil=2&serStr=CIFS%2F9000

http://www1.itrc.hp.com/service/james/dispDoc.do?docURL=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.hp.com%2Fredirect.html%3Furl%3Dhttp%253A%2F%2Fdocs.hp.com%2Fen%2FB8725-90021%2Fch01s02.html%26qt%3D%2BCIFS%2F9000%26hit%3D8&aid=SEARCH_MANUAL&pil=8&serStr=CIFS%2F9000

How to mount, cifsclient
http://www1.itrc.hp.com/service/james/dispDoc.do?docURL=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.hp.com%2Fredirect.html%3Furl%3Dhttp%253A%2F%2Fdocs.hp.com%2Fen%2FB8724-90022%2Fch03s01.html%26qt%3D%2BCIFS%2F9000%26hit%3D15&aid=SEARCH_MANUAL&pil=15&serStr=CIFS%2F9000

Special note: You will have to install the CIFS/9000-Samba client for hp-ux to access windows shares. This will require a reboot of the HP-UX server.

SEP
