CIFS installation

Hi

We have installed cifsclient A.01.09 software on a HP macine running 11.11. The installation required kernel fileset and therefore a reboot. I now have a crew of DBA's moaning at me that there DB's are running slow!!!! Will the installation have changed any kernel parameters, and if so which ones. Also if they get changed back (dont know what too yet) how will this affect the cifs client?

Shalom Mark,

The kernel parameters effecting oracle were probably not changed by the installation.

Its possible your last set of kernel changes were not saved and you reverted to an old one. You would have to check back to your records to spot that.

CIFS-9000 v A.01.09 is a release I installed onto several oracle servers in the past with no impact on performance. This release install kernel changes necessary for it to run. It may have made changes to parameters, but they should not effect oracle operations.

I would suggest a performance analysis to see if the problem is even on the machine.

You could try backing out CIFS and booting again, but thats not the best idea. The best idea is to track the problem down and act based on some data.

Note the version of CIFS you choose is pretty old. You might find overall performance is better with A.02.xx CIFS based on Samba 3.

There should be no performance issue whatsoever from just the client....

Firstly it is not oracle but sybase, however I dont think there will be much difference.

I am new to the company and I am waiting for an email of what the kernel param's should be/have been in the past, and will check against what they are now.

I am already aware of the newer versions but our change control guys are really strict and it is a pain to get new versions of software approved.

The client doesn't change existing kernel parameters, it only:

"forces a system reboot during installation and removal. The CIFS Client modifies the kernel so that it will recognize CIFS as a mountable filesystem."
