That's a pretty broad question. Sounds like you might need a class. Here's one offered by HP that covers a wide breadth of performance analysis and tools:

This kind of topic has been discussed several times on this forum. If you do a simple search you will get lots of information about "how to"
on performance..
sar, vmstat,Perfview are some other commands you can use.

Hi,

in my opinion performance depends on
what kind of application or db your server host.
Anyway a quick view:

- top and, better, glance it's good
for server workload;
also "sar" command help you on this issue, expecially for pinpoint workload on disks;

- "netstat" command for network issue.
