I believe that the sysinfo directory is created by the sysinfo script, a special tool supplied by HP to selected customers. It creates a very comprehensive inventory of the system and indeed, many of the files are quite large. Since sysinfo will re-create all these files and directories, you can safely delete the directory. If it keeps coming back, a user that knows the root password is running the sysinfo script, or has the script running in cron.

Shalom Manuales,

Looked at a relatively normal HP-UX 11i system. Did not even see the folder by that name.

So I'm wondering what tool your system has installed generating files there.

Perhaps the output to a normal utility was re-routed to that location.

Can you provide a few short snippets of what you see?

SEP

Hi Manuales:

By standards, files in the directory '/var/opt/sysinfo' would be files belonging to an optional set of software installed in '/opt/sysinfo'. Hence, you might see if you have a directory '/opt/sysinfo' and if so, what executable "things" live there.

Regards!

...JRF...

Hi there Manuales,

I would do a cron -l and grep for sysinfo to see if anything in cron is writing output to that area. Sounds like there is a script somewhere on your system that collects data about the system and writes it out to /var/opt/sysinfo. Perhaps this is being done so that your backup software can save that info to tape in case you ever have a disaster and have to rebuild your system again (then you can refer to these files to see how your system was before it got destroyed)??

I have heard of sys admins writing such a script AND calling it sysinfo or savesysinfo.sh.

Christine

Hi Manuales ,

sysinfo normally runs through cron , to get everydays important data regarding system configuration, and keeps inside a directory. And many times its useful.

You can check # crontab -l

Cheers,
Raj.
