Hi,

I have this messages when I do a telnet to the server.

I only have 20 sessions (#who), but the parameters are:

npty 150
nstrpty 150
nstrtel 150

I have restart the inetd and I have delete all this pt* and recreate with insf -e, but it works equal. If one user go outs, I have to enter with another session, but the limits its 20. I have seen this server with more sessions, but I haven't known what is happening.

Could anyone help me?
Thanks a lot of!
Carmen.

Hi Carmen,

the problem is described in a warning of two patches:

Warning: 02/09/26 - This Non-Critical Warning has been issued by HP.

- PHNE_25913 introduced behavior that can cause inbound
telnet connections to fail with the message:

telnetd: Telnet device drivers missing to the telnet user.

The following message will also be displayed in the
/var/adm/syslog/syslog.log file:

telnetd[PID]: Fatal error: Telnet device drivers missing:
No such device.

- The inbound telnet connections are refused because there
are no free nstrtel entries available in the kernel. This
kernel parameter defines the maximum number of telnet session
device files. With the patch installed, nstrtel entries may
not be freed if the connecting application does not exit
normally, such as when a telnet window is closed while child
processes are still executing. These entries can only be
recovered by rebooting the system.
- The same behavior is also exhibited with superseding patch
PHNE_27393.
- To avoid this behavior, HP recommends removing PHNE_25913
and PHNE_27393 from systems exhibiting this problem. The
patches should also be removed from software depots used to
install patches on these systems.
- The behavior will be corrected in PHNE_27788, which is
expected to be released by October 5, 2002. HP recommends
installing PHNE_27788 after PHNE_25913 and PHNE_27393 are
removed.
- To prevent reverting back to PHNE_25913 or PHNE_27393 if
PHNE_27788 is removed in the future, HP recommends that the
patches be removed before PHNE_27788 is installed. If you
choose not to remove PHNE_25913 and PHNE_27393 before
installing PHNE_27788, the system will still function
properly after PHNE_27788 is installed.
- If you choose to remove PHNE_25913 and PHNE_27393 before
installing PHNE_27788, the swremove(1M) option
'-x auto_kernel_build=false' may be used to minimize the
number of system reboots that will occur. When this option
is specified, swremove(1M) will not automatically rebuild the
kernel or reboot the system when kernel software is removed.
This option should be used with care, as it is necessary to
rebuild the kernel and reboot the system once all the desired
patches are removed, otherwise the system will still
experience the undesirable behavior.

Do you have a 11.00 system with one of that patch installed?

Best regards,
Fabio
