This is taken from the vPars A.03.03 documentation:

"...OL* for PCI slots works the same on a vPars server as it does on a
non-vPars server. Note that you can execute PCI OL* functions only on the PCI slots that the virtual
partition owns."

If your vPar owns the empty slot, you may online add the card (see OLAR documentation). If you have to add the slot to your vPar, you have to shutdown the vPar for this.

We have an rp7400 we are carving up and we want to add 2 more i/o cards to the primary vpar but the manual states that the vpar must be down to add i/o. How do we add i/o to primary vpar?

That is correct. You need the underlying nPar/server to be shut down before you can add any PCI card. You cannot do OLAR (online replacement) of components on vPars.

After you added your cards, boot your server in non-vPar mode - depending onhow you config'd your environment, the boot disk for the non-vPar boot may actually be the same as your "primay" vPar.

Once booted up in non-vPar mode, simply use vParmodify to add the I:O path(s) or you can use the X-Application GUI /opt/vparmgr/bin/vparmgr (you need X or PC-based X-windows environment to do this --- of course you know X right!?)

Then shutdown and boot vPar mode -- you should know this already right? You boot to BCH, then boot your normal bootdrive (or 1st vPar's boot drive), Yes to interaction with ISL and boot vpmon.. startuo your vPars and you're done.

rad command can be used to do OLR (online replacement ) of failed ones .But for addition , to my knowledge you need to have an outage .

Regards..bl.

Then I revise:

You cannot do an online addition of a PCI Slot to an active vPar.

You can do online OLAR operations on PCI Clost that the vPar owns..

Proceed still with the method I suggested earlier.
You halt the VPar, and from another running vpar use vparmodify -p <PRIMARY_VPAR>
If there is only one Vpar, you need to reboot in Npar mode, add in the card(s) to the vpar wit vparmodify, then reboot in vapr mode</PRIMARY_VPAR>
