The only good thing about SAMBA over NFS is that you can control the access by user or group. In NFS, this is done by file system permissions.

Samba has some tweaks that can be helpfull, like force user, directory mode, create mode, hide directories, etc.

If your configuration does not requires special needs, you should use NFS.

Unix has had NFS code running a lot longer than SAMBA (or SMB or CIFS) code. There are excellent reference guides on NFS including one just for HP-UX by Dave Olker. Since it is part of the OS, there is nothing to add.

This is easy.

Unix = Good. Windows = Bad. Therefore, NFS would be my first choice. I wou;d only consider Samba if Windows were part of the mix and even in that case I tend to use a Windows implementation of NFS except in the case when a Unix box is serving solely as a fileserver for Windows clients.

NFS if my choice!. NFS is easy in configuration. Not difficult as SAMBA.
security: it is hard to say which is the best!

Hi Q,

SAMBA is not prefered when you want to share between UNIX to UNIX. NFS is the best available.

As the definition of SAMBA says, "Samba is an Open Source/Free Software suite that provides seamless file and print services to SMB/CIFS clients." Samba is freely available, unlike other SMB/CIFS implementations, and allows for interoperability between Linux/Unix servers and Windows-based clients.

-Arun
