Hi,

If the failure is on "gethostbyaddr" it means.. the reverse lookup is failing and not "forward lookup".

If you want it to test, just find the hostname for 172.24.11.13 and give an entry for that hostname in your /etc/hosts file. Make sure "file" is the first entry in your /etc/nsswitch.conf file for "hosts" entry. after this change see whether the sendmail is able to send the mail. If it can, then there is something wrong with the DNS server, because it is not able assist in your reverse lookup. Then that would be a issue to be sorted by the DNS administrator.

Regards,
Senthil Kumar .A
The message is OK. The address might be coming from /etc/hosts file. Do you have nic that has this ip address? How does your nsswitch.conf and resolv look like?? Also what does /etc/mail/service.switch look like?

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies, Spl thanks to RAC. Actually this IP is being assigned to the lan0 network card but not being updated in the /etc/hosts file.

Actually the IP address which we are presetly using is assigned to lan1. So is there any configuration change to bypass this error message. Since this server is a production server, i cnt add this IP address to the /etc/hosts nw. Also there is no DNS for this server.

Thanks

Abhi

Hello,

Then I think the server is not able to relay the messages which i am sending. I have configured my DS entry in the /etc/mail/sendmail.cf file, but still if i see the mail.log, it is showing "relay=root@localhost", idealy it should show "relay=servername" if i am right. If i check my mailq all the messages are showing as "deferred".

regards

Abhi

Hi All,

Thank you very much for all your valuable replies. I could solve the problem now. The problem was due to /etc/nsswitch.conf file was not exists in the server. Created /etc/nsswitch.conf. Now sendmail is working fine.

Thanks

Abhi
