Unfortunately, VPARS and Ignite's make_tape_recovery do not work together so you have to do a make_net_recovery to an Ignite server. You can then do a make_tape_recovery of your Ignite server, provided that it is not a VPAR, of course.

Pete

Well you can do a network backup as per usual, or do a backup to tape.
The one question is what version of Vpars do you have?
with the latest versions you can boot the Vpar to a tape (such as an Ignite tape)and recover WITHOUT having to take the whole Npar down.

Take a read of:

http://docs.hp.com/en/5760/vPars_DVD_TAPE_NET_Usage_V2.pdf
Hello,

You can install ignite server on your Npar.
http://docs.hp.com/en/B2355-90959/ch02s02.html
after you'll be able to ignite your vpars on it. And finally ignite you server on tape.

Regards
Pat
Melvyn,

Thanks for pointing that out! However, one statement in that doc has me puzzled. It says "a) Prior to A.03.03 and A.04.02, a vpar may be recovered from a tape image." That is contrary to everything I've ever know and read. It goes on to say "b) For PA-systems, starting with A.03.03 and A.04.02, a vpar may be recovered from tape while the system is up and running in a vPars envionment."

This sounds like it's saying it doesn't matter what versions you have, you can use tape. Can you shed some light on this?

Pete

Pete
My pleasure.
Essentially, with the older versions, you could create an Ignite Recovery Tape for a Vpar, but to recover it meant halting ALL the Vpars on the Npar, and then booting the Npar to the Ignite Tape, and selecting the boot disk for the relevant Vpar.

With the new versions, you just boot the Vpar to the tape drive on that Vpar, PROVIDED it has been assigned as a resource in the vpdb, using the hw patgh and the :TAPE suffix, as opposed to BOOT or ALTBOOT

Hope that helps
