Hi Admins,

root is sending alert mails to depadm (system user). Could you please let me know how to restrict this. There is no entry in /etc/mail/aliases for this.

Alert mail details:
From root@warusdb006.xxxxx.net Tue Mar 21 08:22:15 GMT 2006
Received: (from lp@localhost)
by warusdb006.xxxxx.net (8.9.3 (PHNE_28810)/8.9.3) id IAA05002
for depadm; Tue, 21 Mar 2006 08:22:15 GMT
Date: Tue, 21 Mar 2006 08:22:15 GMT
From: root@warusdb006.xxxxx.net
Message-Id: <200603210822.IAA05002@warusdb006.xxxxx.net>
X-Authentication-Warning: warusdb6.xxxxx.net: lp set sender to root using -f
To: depadm@warusdb006.xxxxx.net

error code 2 in request 5510-7327 on printer 5510

From root@warusdb006.xxxxx.net Tue Mar 21 10:49:34 GMT 2006
Received: (from lp@localhost)
by warusdb006.xxxxx.net (8.9.3 (PHNE_28810)/8.9.3) id KAA22415
for depadm; Tue, 21 Mar 2006 10:49:34 GMT
Date: Tue, 21 Mar 2006 10:49:34 GMT
From: root@warusdb006.xxxxx.net
Message-Id: <200603211049.KAA22415@warusdb006.xxxxx.net>
X-Authentication-Warning: warusdb6.xxxxx.net: lp set sender to root using -f
To: depadm@warusdb006.xxxxx.net

error code 2 in request run9-8395 on printer run9From root@warusdb006.xxxxx.net Tue Mar 21 08:22:15 GMT 2006
>X-Authentication-Warning: warusdb6.xxxxx.net: lp set sender to root using -f

The spooler in DG Unix had the capability to send e-mail about jobs, but I don't believe HP-UX does. Yet you are clearly getting this from some print manager. Do you have a JetDirect print server you send jobs to that might be set-up to e-mail about errors?

mark

Thanks for the immediate response.
I can see only this entry with "forward" in that server.
O ForwardPath=$z/.forward.$w+$h:$z/.forward+$h:$z/.forward.$w:$z/.forward

How to check from where these alerts are generated in printer server?

From a doc I have:

This is due to an invalid setting for the Idle-timeout parameter, which
specifies a timeout after which to close a connection if no data is being sent.

To change the value of "idle-timeout" on the jetdirect card:

- use nslookup (printer name) to get the printer's ip address
- telnet (printer ip address)
- at the ">" prompt press [return] TWICE
- type "/" to show current parameter settings
- note "Idle Timeout" value (eg 30 seconds)
- type "?"
- type "idle-timeout: 200 (to increase to 200 seconds).
- type "quit" to save and exit with these settings.

NOTE: The maximum number for the JetDirect card timeout is 1 hour (3600
seconds). Be careful if you use high values, you might block the port for other
users.
