We recently upgraded to Win2k on several PCs and since then we've not been able to remove the bannor page from our network printer, 5si. I found a discussion on this forum from January 2001 which seems to offer a solution(See below) However I am new to Telnet and am interested in knowing how to do this. Can anyone help?

"As it turned out this printer (HP 8000 DN) had a JetDirect card and all I had to do was to telnet to the card and issue;
banner: 0

(and the bannerpage i question was infact a trailerpage...:)

thanks anyway

Andreas "

Just try

telnet printername

On the HP 8000 series it puts you into a command shell with a > prompt. From there, you can type

banner 0

to disable the banner. Then type "quit" to save and exit.

Ok. Is it happening from HP-UX (when you lp a file to the printer) or is it just happening from Win2k? There might be some banner settings in Win2k, but I'll have to ask the wizard in the next cubicle about that one.
Hi Lori

Here is what you have to do:

1. Edit /usr/spool/lp/initerface/model.orig/<PRINTER name=""> and make BANNER="no"

2. Also around lines no 1071 hash the line

# banner = $ BANNER

3. stop the schedule < lpshut >

4. start it again < lpsched >

and you will have no banners .All the best.

Manoj Srivastava</PRINTER>

Are you talking about the Separator page button on the printer properties? I found that too. That's one of the things we've been working with for a long time. Somewhere I read a command to put in that box so it wouldn't print but that didn't work.

Hi Lori

Infact I am the one to feel sorry as I didnt read you well , the solution I gave was for a network printer on a Unix Server, for a Desktop /windows operating system I dont have any ideas as of now. But in case you have a Unix server driving the printer then this is the solution.

Manoj Srivastava

It seems this banner issue is a common problem when a printer is located on a Netware Server and the only way to fix it is through Netware Client on the server. Here's an answer on one forum http://discussions.virtualdr.com/Forum4/HTML/002440.html.
I found the same answer on the Microsoft website. We don't have access to the Netware Server this printer is on so I can't test it but with everything I've read I have no doubt it would work. We will just put up with the annoyance until we can move the printer to our server.

Thank you to everyone for the input!! I learned how to telnet which is a big help! I should have given more points on that one... sorry.

Lori

Lori -- actually, the solution should be fairly simple, and doesn't require access to the netware server any greater than is required for printer access.

In the control panel on the windbloz box, find the CSNW tab. This is where the user can specify which should be the default netware server to connect to. In that box there's a check box entitled "print banner". Uncheck the box, and you should not have any more banner pages printing either before or after the print job.

This same issue has caused several calls to my desk from users about the campus here. (We won't talk about what happened when we tried to convert to MS Print services!)

Hope you can resolve the issue with minimal fuss.

Mark
