Hostname length

Dear all,

I'm going to migrate from IBM Server to HPUX server, but facing problem in hostname length. in IBM Server there's no limitation for hostname, but in hpux limited by 8 characters. The problem is i don't want to change the hostname, since changing hostname will require many effort to application.
Any idea how to solve my problem ?

Hi Sunaryo,

Hostname length is not recommended to be greater than 8 characters.

You need to contact your local HP Sales Person and discuss with them using the Node and Hostname Expansion product on HP-UX 11.23:

HPUX allow you create hostname up to 64 character but your hostname must use (.) to separate each 8 character.
Eg:
EXAMPLE1.DOMAIN01.COM

Hi,

another approach,
maybe you could use an alias in your DNS.

This way your applications will find any long aliasname for the short hostname.
We are doing this very often for Webapplications. Using this you can also easily move your Apps to another Server by just changing the Alias ...
