Hi:

HP-UX 11.23 (aka 11i v2) is *not* supported on K-class servers. See:

http://www.docs.hp.com/en/5991-4794/5991-4794.pdf

I would also suggest that for any installation, a cold-install is far preferable to an "upgrade". By doing a cold-install you have the opportunity to resize vg00 filesystems and you begin with a clean set of patches that match the release you are installing.

The document I cited above provides the guidelines you need in either case.

Regards!

...JRF...

The HP-UX OS upgrade is simply not practical -- far too many issues to resolve, even going from 11.11 to 11i.23. So the easy answer is that K-class simply cannot run 11.23. The L-class is OK. Refer to this document for supported and unsupported servers.

http://docs.hp.com/en/5991-0792/5991-0792.pdf

Here's an excerpt:

PA-RISC Servers -------------------------------------------

All 32-bit servers (including 32-bit A-Class servers A180 and A180C)
All D-Class servers
All R-Class servers
All E-Class servers
All K-Class servers
All T-Class servers
All V-Class servers

PA-RISC Workstations --------------------------------------

B132L, B132L+, B160L, B180L
B1000, B2000, B2600
C100, C110, C160L, C160, C180, C200, C240, C360, C3000, C3600, C3650, C3700, C3750, C8000, J200, J210, J210XC, J280, J282, J2240
J5000, J5600, J7000, J6000, J6700, J6750, 705, 710, 712, 715/33, 715/50, 715/75, 715/64, 715/80, 715/100, 715/100XC
720, 730, 735, 750, 755, 725/50, 725/75, 725/100

Sir,
Thanks for the answers .

The links were helpful. But the cold installs require application and other softwares to be installed again on the server But for the update it is not necessary because filesystems and data's are preserved ,becaused of that i was prefereing update of the OS. Is that true.
Thanks

Well, that really depends on how your applications and data are set up on the machine.

If you applications and data are on their own VG's, then NO you don't have to reinstall the apps and restore your data.

You can import, with the vgimport command, your other VGs after you are finished installing the new OS.

Actually, most applications, especially commercial ones won't run on new systems -- not because the new system is necessarily incompatible, but that the programmers used 'cute' tricks that are revision dependent. When doing a rather significant jump such as 11.00 to 11.23, I would want all applications reinstalled using the latest versions of the programs. If the applications can't be upgraded (no support contract, no money for new licenses), then you'll have to extensively test every old application to make sure it still works.
