What is the best procedure to upgrade a system from 11.11 to 11.23. This is a RP2405 if it matters?

Hi Scott:

A cold-install! This is the cleanest way to do any OS level transition. You have the opportunity to resize your vg00 logical volumes and begin with a clean Installed Products Database ('/var/adm/sw').

If you have setup your vg00 environment to only consist of the standard OS-related logical volumes, you will only need to 'vgimport' non-vg00 volume groups to "see" your non-vg00 filesystems.

Create a 'fbackup' tape of 'vg00' filesystems before you start and capture all of your custom configuation files in a directory or filesystem that you will later 'vgimport'. After installation, then, you will have be able to use these files for reference and or to snip sections from for customizing your virgin installation files.

Regards!

...JRF...

Although I did not do it myself, some of my co-workers report that using update_ux works fine. The only caveat I heard of until now, is that formulas in kernel parameters are not supported in 11.23 and that you are better to replace any formula you may have by a value prior to the update.

I also would recommend a cold-install.

However, if you want to attempt an upgrade, I would first do it on a test server.

Have a read through the documentation here:

http://docs.hp.com/en/oshpux11iv2oe.html#Installing%20and%20Updating

Especially the following 2 manuals:

HP-UX 11i v2 Read Before Installing or Updating, March 2006

HP-UX 11i v2 Installation and Update Guide, March 2006
