I just purchased a new system and need to configure it the same as one I have. To do this I am going to use last week's ignite tape from our current system. What do I need to do during boot up on the new system to build it from the ignite tape?

Thanks,

..Joe

Hi Joe:

Firstly, I am assuming similar hardware (from the same class) and a current 'make_tape_recovery' tape consisting of only volume group vg00. My remarks, below, are based upon this.

Boot your server from the tape drive containing your Ignite tape. Select "No" when asked if you wish to interact with the IPL.

After a few minutes you will see the message "Recovery tape created from system <HOSTNAME> on <DATE_TIME>. Press return to continue". Do this.

Choose "Install / Media Only" and select the Advanced Installation tab to customize your installation.

It will take about 45-minutes to load the root volume group configuration. All displayed messages will be written to /var/opt/ignite/local/install.log. Do *not* dispair if at the end you see a block-letter "FAILURE" message. The Ignite recovery will attempt to process the non-zero volume groups and fail due to differing/missing devices files in the vg map files it's using.

Regards!

...JRF...</DATE_TIME></HOSTNAME>

Thanks. It is from the same class, although my current server is an L1000 w/2CPUs and my new system is an L2000 w/4CPUs. This is OK, isn't it?

..Joe

Joe,

You've been given excellent advice here. The only thing I can add is if your new system is an additional machine for your environment versus a replacement for the other L.

If this is a new machine to be added and the old machine will be kept on the LAN, I would suggest updating the IP address and hostname. Interrupt the Ignite install when given the oppportunity to do so and use the IUX GUI to customize the hostname, IP address and any other necessary networking or config data.

Cheers,
Jim

Joe,

With tape in drive after power-up:

1. Interrupt boot

2. sea ipl

3. boot from tape

4. Interrupt IUX boot when you see something similar to:
WARNING: The configuration information calls for a non-interactive installation
Press <RETURN> within 10 seconds to cancel batch-mode installation.

5. You should then get:
Really cancel non-interactive install and start the user interface? ([y]/n): _Y_

6. Heed the notice that should follow:
NOTE: The System Recovery mode has been disabled due to user intervention, or differences in system configuration. Some original system parameters (like IO configuration, /etc/fstab, etc.) will not be restored due to this. The system specific configuration of hostname, IP address, root password, date, time, network configuration etc. can be configured using the system screens of the adfanced user interface.
Press return to continue:

7. The Ignite-UX GUI should then start. Make your changes then Go Go.

Cheers,
Jim</RETURN>
