FBACKUP failure

Hi All

In my server fbackup fails very often( at least once in a week) with error" Volume used more than 100 times. We advised the backup team to mark the tape and to not use further.

Shall i conclude that this is a tape drive problem.Please advise.

so,

Not a drive problem. Fbackup defaults at the maximum number of uses per tape to 100. I cannot remember off the top of my head where this is configured, but if you are happy to use your tapes more than 100 times, then you will need to increase this default.

You've done the right thing. Don't use tapes more than 100 times.

That figure may change in the future as tape relaiblity improves.

Hi so,

Fbackup uses a configuration file (/etc/sam/br/fbackup_config) indside this file you can find an option called maxvoluses. The default value for this option is 100.

Depending on what kind of tapes you are using you increase this value.

The nominal life of a tape media cartridge is 5000 load and unload cycles, or 1,000,000 passes over the head. This applies to all DLT, SDLT and LTO tapes.
