Backup problem

Hi All,

I am taking fbackup on my drive /dev/rmt/1m. It is writing to tape and finally after sometime gives the following error.
52003: /apps/orafinp/finpappl/au/11.5.0/forms/ZHT/IGSPS109.fmb 1736
52004: /apps/orafinp/finpappl/au/11.5.0/forms/ZHT/IGSPS110.fmb 1848
fbackup(3027): ioctl error, can't query outfile
at media record 766014
fbackup(3102): attempting to make this volume salvagable
fbackup(3123): could not read the previous checkpoint record
fbackup(3105): writing 2 EOFs and rewinding the tape
fbackup(3106): please mount a good tape
fbackup(3310): enter '^[yY]' when volume 1 is ready on /dev/rmt/1m,
or '^[nN]' to discontinue:
fbackup(3004): writer aborting
fbackup(1002): Backup did not complete : Reader or Writer process exit

It is the second day that the same problem occurs. I am sure that it is not a media problem. The mediam is used for 15 time and the previos day media was used only for 1 day.

Please advise me whether I have to go ahead with replacing the drive.

First clean the drive. Look into the syslog for io errors. Install LTT (http://www.hp.com/support/tapetools ) and run an assessment test. If you got IO errors, consider to replace the drive.

ioctl means there was a tape drive error. Use a cleaning tape followed by a new tape and retry the backup. If it fails again, you'll have to replace the tape drive. You should also see a lot of tape hardware error messages recorded in /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log
