Yes vincent we will look into HP XP480 soon. Which one u have ? On what basis u are saying XP is twice faster ? Pls. share with me if u have any data etc .

We are in process of evaluting the EMC symmatrix 8430 disk stogare using the fC with brocade switch(SAN) . Can anybody suggest some good free tools available for the bencmarking on the i/o's per second , read/write . Something which can give us some data to look at . Any suggestions are welcome . Our comparision is with EMC old symmtrix box - 3400 which works with Fast Wide SCSI .
If you have Glance installed, have a look at it. You should be able to get some of the information you want via Glance. If it isn't installed you can get a trial version off of the Application CDs that will last for 90 days, I think.

You should also take a look at 'sar'. sar can provide you with quite a bit of information on disk performance, cpu performance, etc.

I think you will find these 2 things a good place to start.

You can have a look at the iostat command that'll give you bps read and write stats.

You can also d/l glance for many os'es on a free trial.. in the time before registration you should get enough info gathered to make your comparrison.

Bill

If it's benchmarks you are looking for, try http://www.acnc.com/benchmarks.html

They have lots of links to industry standard benchmarks.

Since you're looking at EMC... have you looked at an XP? The XP is about twice as fast as an EMC, and is less expensive, too.

Good luck

I used iozone at the link that vincent noted to benchmark an EMC CLARiiON IP4700. The program can produce output that goes to an excel spreadsheet to provide graphs of the output statistics

I would likely use Iozone with multiple
threads/processes. The aggregate bandwidth of the EMC is less than an XP :-)
See: http://www.iozone.org
You can use glance, iostat, sar etc....

I did the same project that you are doing know about a year and a half ago.

We didn't really get a big performance boost moving from EMC SCSI to EMC Fibre but what we got was the expandability with the switch/conectrix. However, some of the new EMC frames have more internal buses then in the past. You may get added performance based on this not necassary SCSI vs Fibre.
