DOS FTP setup

When a DOS machine server as a FTP server or FTP client, shall I need to do some configuration . How to configure a DOS machine as a FTP server or FTP client?

DOS does not have an ftp server capability, same as most versions of Windows. Versions like NT and Win2000 can have an ftp server defined but it is a cryptic Internet Services process.

Most versions of DOS since about 3.1 have had ftp (client) available. There is no configuration necessary. Just type the word ftp at the DOS prompt. For Windows, use the MSDOS window or the Start Menu: Run... item.

There used to be some ftp software that would run on DOS years ago. I did a search and I found some links that might help you:

If I need a simple FTP server I'm likely to use Linux. We needed a system to handle remote printing and ftp services at a remote site. I found an old desktop box that the desktop guys said was too slow to run the latest version of Windows. I loaded Linux on it, configured it, and it makes a fine ftp/print server.

You MIGHT be able to set up an FTP server on a DOS machine IF you can find a TCP/IP package for DOS that has that capability. You have to remember that DOS did not have ANY networking capability be default so the package had to be installed and set up to start TSR (terminate and stay resident) programs via the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files.

I honestly don't know if there are any companies that produce a TCP/IP package for DOS anymore. If you can find one, great, if not, I think you'll be out of luck.

You'll also have to take into account the fact that you'll need appropriate drivers for whatever NIC you will use with this machine as well.

If you decide to try to do this, you've got quite a task ahead of you.
