Many steps involved. Probably the most important of which was to install the 11.00 SDUX onto the system.

All in all after going both ways, I find doing a fresh install to be quicker and cleaner.

Hi, what are best practices for performing HP-UX Upgrades? I have 10 remote sites, all D-classes on 10.20, moving to 11.0 (for Oracle 8i purposes). Is it better to perform completely clean install, and import critical files? Use Ignite-UX and do system upgrade? Any white papers available on topic. Sorry so broad, but doing the best I can.
What's the smoothest, cheapest, least intrusive approach?

Much appreciated,
Emmanuel

If the systems are all running the same (or very smilar) applications and have similar sizing requirements then I absolutely recommned doing a clean install on a siingle system, patch it as necesary, load all apps, and take an Ignite image. then push this image (making small modifications as necessary) to all other servers.

This gives you a (relatively) painless path to a clean install across all servers.

Many HP-UX administrators find Ignite "cloning" to be the quickest and simplest method to install a lot of similar archetectured systems. I would check www.software.hp.com/products/Ignite for more documentation on using Ignite.

There is also a doucment available via HP's ITRC Technical Knowledge base on using Ignite for cloning:

KBRC00002415
Cloning systems with make_net_recovery

It is best to do a fresh install of the new level unless there is something from the old level that is ABSOLUTELY necessary. If you prepare properly, the fresh install goes smoothly, whereas the upgrade can get pretty complicated. I am attaching a list of items that you might need to print out or copy to tape. This is a pretty generic list, you will probably have to add any number of items to it, but it is a good place to start.

Thanks All. I will investigate the SD-UX, as well as Ignite-UX, and see if I can convince my colleagues that a Fresh install is good. Unfortunately, each remote site (over 15)is completely autonomous. They do not follow the same plan for each--one site has a network backup, another site uses sam backup, another site uses fbackup....just using backups as an example...

Thanks again,
Emmanuel
