Hi,

We've been asked to configure an RP7420 (12 way) server into two 6 way partitions. I'm sure its not that difficult but I can't find much on the web. I am due to go on a course but we need to configure this particular server before I do. Does anyone have any good links. I've seen the docs on the HP website but they are more conceptual that actual command level. Any links or advice would be beneficial.

Adam,
in BROAD terms:
npar = hardware based seperation
vpar = software based seperation

You can run a mix of both as well, of course!
So you need hardware and software.

sorry peter think I wasn't very clear. What I was suggesting was in order to be able to configure npars (hard partitions) do I need any additional software in the machine other than the Npar Provider software.

To setup Npars, all you need is a server that is Npar capabale, the first Npar created and an OS installed. The Npar Provider is used for other utiilities, as Npars is pure hardware based

If I read your question correctly, you have a two cell server, with 12 CPU's. If you create two Npars (one cell per Npar) you will get the CPU's in the Npar that belong to the cell. You need to verify how many CPU's are on each cell board before doing this
Hello,
Once you get that far the internal cdrom/dvd will only be visible to one partition, You can use ignite (or another rom drive)to install the os. Also the internal scsi controller on the mp card is now split. In order to get full redunancy install an external disk and mirror each vg00 to one internal and one external disk. That way if an internal scsi controller / disk has a problem you can run off the external one until you can fix the failing component .
good luck
Mike

Adam, We sure can walk you through. But first things first.

1. Is the rp7420 currently up/partitioned?

2. What partitioning do you want? Hard (nPar) or soft (vPar)? nPar's resources are fixed whilst vPar's resources are movable (CPUs can be moved w/o shutting down the partitions).

3. Do you have boot (Disk) and LAN (network) as well as storage adapters to allow you to have 2 operating systems/partitions?

IF nPar:
- do you know yourself around the GSP/MP prompt?
- if not, we can walk you through.

IF vPar:
- are you licensed for vPar
- do you have the software?
