hi,

very often it is not just a matter of a simple Operating System upgrade. You should consider also the different applications that *should* run on the server. Will the applications continue to work on the new OS? Have you verified the compatibility matrix?

In any cases, i would prefer to do a good backup and if possible get a test server and perform anything i want to do before actually *touching* my production server...

good luck!

kind regards
yogeeraj

Hello,
I was trying hpux upgrade ,but many hp guru's suggested that cold install is the best one when compared to upgrade. But still for various reasons i had to continue with the upgrade. But my question is if the upgrade fails ,i will end up with reinstalling box.How could i create the vg00 again after the install and recover the other volumegroups(layed out on other disks) which are having the applications. Thanks so much in advance for any reply.
Thanks

Before you do anything, take the backups.

for vg00 - take ignite
for non-vg00 - take backups.

In any case you must have those.

Hi,

Backup and ignite are surely necessary as RAC & Yogeeraj say.

Another way of working, if your VG00 is mirrored, split the mirror and install or upgrade on the disk remainingin the VG. So will keep always the last version of your current release.

Roland

Be sure to create a map file via vgexport before starting your upgrade. save a copy of the map file to a different system. use vgimport to bring the vg's back on line.

man vgimport, man vgexport for specific info.

as recommended by others and ignite back up and data backup is highly recommended.

If you have to cold install 11i, be sure you have copies of /etc/hosts, /etc/passwd (if not trusted and /tcb if trusted) and all the other files theat were customized on the 11.0 system (i.e /sbin/init.d, /etc/profile, /etc services just to name some)
