We have a problem on our rp5430 with hp-ux11.11 so I tried to cycle the server as I offten did:

shutdown -r -y 0

It only did shutting down all the daemons, system processes, but not the -r for reboot. The machine still shows runing, and I can ping the IP. But of course now there is no login prompt.

I just wonder what could cause shutdown -r to not do reboot ?

Common problem. Oracle shutdown hangs. Thats because dbshut is shipped with shutdown instead of shutdown immediate.

If you use Oracle change dbshut.

If not, look for hangs. See the shutdown log to see what step is hanging. /var/adm/syslog

Since your machine is pretty much a brick right now, you may need to power cycle it.
