Does it have any hardware problems? Check cables, connections. man ioscan . unknown states mostly refers to a hardware which is not supported.

Noble,
Check Hardware , it should be connected properly and working ok, then do insf -C tape , install the tape2/stape driver in sam , reboot, check ioscan -fnC tape , if ok --> mt -t /dev/rmt/0mn status.
Take a test backup.

Cheers,
Raj.

The tape drive is not responding so there is no hardware present (or improperly addressed), or the tape driver is not present. What model is the tape drive?

Hi,

if the tape drive was not installed at the time of OS installation, the driver is not installed. The unclaimed status loks like this.
Just add the "stape" driver to your kernel and reboot.
