Hello Team,

Just a quick tsm query, on our HP servers there are daily tsm incrementals scheduled, my query is, I have done bit of research and found out, below is the description on how tsm incremental backup works. My question is below

1.Tsm Daily Incremental Backups ( This is what we are currently using)

3 versions of files are kept at all times in the tsm server "depending upon change frequency of file".

The 2 oldest versions will be expired after 35 days and the latest version will be kept at all times. If the source file is deleted from the client, then the last backup will be kept for 90 days then expired.

(Question: What do you mean by depending upon change frequency of file in the above?"

Please let me know

Cheers
Raf

Raf,
If you could provide the figures as in from your management clause that would help.

With what ever information you have provided let me try to explain how it works

>>>>3 versions of files are kept at all times in the tsm server "depending upon change frequency of file".
This is what you call as "VerExists". This is nothing but the maximum no. of backup versions to retain for files that are currently on client file system. This is optional and the default value if not specified is 2.

I know that backup group definition in TSM is very confusing, please find below some details on parameters that effect how backup is done in TSM

VERExists
--------------------
Specifies the maximum number of backup versions to retain for files that are currently on the client file system.

VERDeleted
----------
Specifies the maximum number of backup versions to retain for files that are deleted from the client file system.

RETEtra
--------
Specifies how many days TSM retains a backup version after that version becomes inactive. A version of a file becomes inactive when the client stores a more recent backup version, or when the client deletes the file from the workstation and then runs a full incremental backup.

RETOnly
--------
Specifies the retention time, in days, for the last backup version of a file that has been deleted from the client's file system.

Hope this explains :). Let me know if you have any additional questions

regards
Mobeen
