System name and node name are different !!

Admins,

I got an interesting stuff, but quite weird. One of my server shows different hostname and node name. Can anyone confirm:

(1) How this can happen by itself,
(2) I would like to make nodename same as system name, Will this impact business by any means, like reboot..?
(3) Can I do this name change online, when my server is live.

Hi:

Normally the 'nodename' is set from the 'hostname' as recorded in '/etc/rc.config.d/netconf'. Normally, the two are the same. A restart of networking daemons (or better, a reboot) is required to change these entities.

So what didn't you find answered?

As for HOW did you end up with differing hostnames and nodenames, read the manpages for 'hostname' and for 'uname'. Both commands, while usually used to *query* the appropriate value can be used to *set* it as well.

Again a quick qn, is it advisable to change nodename same as system name through SAM. If I do so, whether /sbin/init.d/net stop/start required..?
