Hello,

Currently I plan to configure APA for my hpux11i v2 box.

I was given 2 identical IPs for 2 cards: lan1 and lan2 by network guy and he told me that the switch is set to manual mode.
I plan to configure the apa for that 2 cards with same ip.
Is this going to work out? Please advise.
thanks

Shalom,

If either of these cards is a Gigabit card the switch MUST be configured to auto-negotiate.

Configuration examples:
http://docs.hp.com/en/J4240-90033/ch01s08.html

SEP

I always got the error message about "Protocol already logged on port 1". Is it because I have configured the lan1 already. Currently I only configured lan1.

Do I need to unconfigure lan1? Can I just delete those information from /etc/rc.config.d/netconf?

Thanks

By default apa is setup in manual mode. but you would not assign an ip to two lanics. You would assign an ip to lan900 or lan901, or whatever you have chosen in /etc/rc.config.d/netconf. here is a short rundown:

1. edit /etc/rc.config/d/hp_apaconf and add this:

HP_APA_INTERFACE_NAME[0]=lan900
HP_APA_LOAD_BALANCE_MODE[0]=LB_MAC
HP_APA_MANUAL_LA[0]="1,2" <-- these are the lan card instance numbers.

2. edit /etc/rc.config/d/hp_apaportconf and add:

HP_APAPORT_INTERFACE_NAME[0]=lan1
HP_APAPORT_CONFIG_MODE[0]=MANUAL
HP_APAPORT_INTERFACE_NAME[1]=lan2
HP_APAPORT_CONFIG_MODE[1]=MANUAL

3. edit your /etc/rc.config.d/netconf file and change it to use interface lan900

INTERFACE_NAME[0]="lan900"
IP_ADDRESS[0]="172.20.20.20"
SUBNET_MASK[0]="255.255.255.0"
BROADCAST_ADDRESS[0]=""
INTERFACE_STATE[0]=""
DHCP_ENABLE[0]=0

Then you can either reboot or logon via an mp console and do the following.

/sbin/init.d/hplm stop
/sbin/init.d/hpapa stop
/sbin/init.d/net stop

then

/sbin/init.d/hplm start
/sbin/init.d/hpapa start
/sbin/init.d/net start

Also as noted earlier you will want to setup your nics to use auto-negotiation if they are Gigabit cards. If you do an ioscan -funC lan and look at the driver then you will know which file to edit under /etc/rc.config.d. They are usually named /etc/rc.config.d/hp<DRIVER>conf.

Last note, I would not do this on a production box during the day. Schedule some downtime o do this. I once had an issue setting up APA on a box and it took about 30 minutes to get it working properly. But then again I was using FEC_AUTO for trunking.

</DRIVER>

Yes, you have to unconfigure lan1. More specifically, none of the IP or ARP SAPs can be bound to a physical device when placing that device into a link-aggregate.

Hi Count,

It works. the ifconfig lanx down and ifcongi lanx unplumb is the key.

One more question. Currently I am using the default mode - Manual since my switch is set to that mode. May I know what is the difference between this mode and the lan monitor?

Actually, I tested out already. if one card failes, the other one is still working. Why do I need to fail over by using lan monitor mode?

I am not 100% sure, but I believe that manual mode also does trunking. And lan monitor mode only provides failover w/o trunking.
