Steve,

Over the years, update has improved tremendously. Way back, the 10.20 to 11.0 upgrade was a complete disaster and people still then to not recommend update.

By the same token, when you update, you bring along all your old trash and bypass the opportunity to start fresh, with properly sized root file systems, none of the obsolete patches taking up all that space in /var, etc., etc.

For me, I always choose a cold install, but you truly do have a choice.

Pete

Steve,
have you read :

Update guide
http://docs.hp.com/en/5991-6460/5991-6460.pdf
Read before Installing Guide
http://docs.hp.com/en/5991-6451/5991-6451.pdf

I would make a full system backup and then use update. But it all depends what you have got used to in the past. There used to be 10.20 -> 11.00 problems.

Please read:
http://66.34.90.71/ITRCForumsEtiquette/after.html

Please also read:
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/helptips.do?#33 on how to reward any useful answers given to your questions.

So far you have not awarded any points !

Hi,

I would prefer a clean cold install, but if you follow the instructions an upgrade should run smoothly.

Take care of the new device files (/dev/disk/diskx and /dev/disk/diskx_p2 for boot disks) and the slightly different "set_parms initial" script.

Good luck!
