Error on syslog

Hi All,

Does anyone know what this error means? I've got hundreds of it everyday and it's kinda annoying.

May 29 00:42:17 ssopap01 syslog: identd: remote owner request failed : No such file or directory
May 29 01:25:08 ssopap01 instl_bootd[25204]: instl_bootd: No available IP address found in: /etc/opt/ignite/instl_boottab

Hello Sandy,

Please check your /etc/inetd.conf. Are you using -l at instl_bootd? remove -l option, and run inetd -c.

I hope you dont have error at syslog anymore.

In your case it might be related with the sendmail.

The instl_bootd is only used if you are using make_net_recovery or golden image on a centralized ignite-ux server. Otherwise you can comment it on the inetd.conf and restart it. The PA-RISC and Itanium clients different protocol/files for getting IP for booting from the network.

man instl_bootd

/etc/opt/ignite/instl_boottab

No reason to run this unless you are running an Ignite boot server. Otherwise its a security hazard that merely complicates your life.

Hi Jov,

The links you gave is not really helping:
- For the ident problem, the patches is for HPUX 11.00, mine is 11.23 running on rp3440
- For the instl_bootd, I've got no other system that doing boot lan to this server.

Freddy, I don't want to turn off the logging

Rasheed, I marked /etc/inetd.conf for the instl_bootd, hopefully this is the cause. Any idea for the inetd? Thanks for your input

Hi Sandy,

You can comment out the ident service from /etc/inetd.conf and run inetd -c to effect the change or 'kill -HUP .
This would disable the ident service which is primarly used by sendmail.

If you're commented out the bootd service as well, then once inetd is restarted, both services should be disabled.
