hello Gurus,

I need to make a exact replica of a D370 server that is to be retired. The new hardware is a L3000 class server. Since the hardware is different i believe ignite wont work. Whats the best way to do this?

I am thinking of fresh installing the OS and restore completly from backup of the D class server. Will this be OK? What files do i need to exclude while backing up?

Any help will be great

Thanks
George

hi George,

I would prefer to do a fresh OS installation on the L3000 and then if possible also do a fresh installation of the Application software and do the appropriate configuration.

Unless, it is too complicated, this a chance to reconfigure the system for Optimal performance. You may be having more resources on the L3000 than previously on the D370.

good luck!

kind regards
yogeeraj

Shalom,

This will not work. The hardware is too different.

A Golden image might work but is more work than a clean OS install.

Your second plan will be better. Exclude all of vg00 the boot vg. You will need some configuration files from the D box, but should take them manually.

SEP

Hi.

I would agree with Steven's suggestion with one addition, restore the /usr/local/ tree to another location and copy the libraries/files you may need, alternatively restore the /usr/local tree with the no overwrite option set.

You may also want to do the same with the /opt tree.

Regards

Andrew Y

I hope you're 11.00 or higher on that D370 and not 10.20 ?
If you're running 10.20 there's no way you can make an exact replica of it.

Regarding the Ignite, you might actually be able to pull it off.
Somewhere in the past I did some testing moving installations across the different classes and most of the times only some extra drivers and minor changes where needed after the initial ignite process.

Can't recall all tests I have done but restoring ignites from several superdome partitions onto L-Class and N-Class systems for a customer who was trying some DR scenarios comes to mind and that was succesfull.

Might be worth a try and most you can loose is time ( if you have that available offcourse ;-)

Hi

Marcel makes a good point, was this a 32bit or 64-bit version of the server and or OS as the D370 could be either.

Regards

Andrew Y
