if you already have the driver in the kernel, your problem could probably due to insufficient patch level in the system :

For HP-UX 11.00 :
PHKL_35993 : s700_800 11.00 SCSI Tape (stape) cumulative

For HP-UX 11.11 :
PHKL_34552 : s700_800 11.11 SCSI Tape (stape) cumulative

You did not talk about your OS version, so go to SAM, kernel and drivers section and configure "stape" into the kernel. Build a new kernel (SAM will do this for you) and reboot.

Solution :-

#lsdev -C tape
Character Block Driver Class
205 -1 stape tape

Should give similar output if the driver is there in kernel otherwise shall be blank.

If the driver not listed you can add the same through either command line or using SAM.

SAM->Kenrel Configuration->Drivers

Select stape and from action menu select add driver to kernel. Followed by this the kernel shall rebuild and the system shall reboot.

If u couldn`t able to find stape then appy the above patches.

one penny from my side.... ;)

Please take appropriate backups. though doing the above with sam will create vmunix.prev, still suggested is you know how to recover in case of any failures as well....(cautious!)
