Hi all
I know not too many people still use rdist but I do. any help any one can give me would be really appreciated. I have a 10.2 HP box that I am doing an rdist to from a solaris 8 box. I get an erro message as follows.

updating host hpserv02
rdist: connection failed: version numbers don't match

Any idea what would cause this? my guess is that the rdist versions are not compatable, because they are different unix platforms.

any suggestions? any way around it?

Thanks,

Phil

DIAGNOSTICS
A complaint about mismatch of rdist version numbers may mean that an executable rdist is not in the shell's path on the remote system.

So, did this ever work and it just quit?
No,
I am trying this for the first time. I checked the paths and they are identical. I did a whereis on both systems.

This same distfile was used for moving HP info to a solaris box previously though.

any other ideas?

Thanks,

Phil
from old solaris man page(s):

In order to be able to use rdist across machines, each host machine must have a /etc/host.equiv file, or the user must
have an entry in the .rhosts file in the home directory.

See hosts.equiv(4) for more information.

A complaint about mismatch of rdist version numbers may really stem from some problem with starting your shell, for
example, you are in too many groups.

=====================

So, I guess one way to test this is can you successfully rlogin to the solaris box from your hp box as the user running rdist W/O a password? If that works, is rdist in the current path on the solaris box?

After that, I'm out of ideas (at least for now)
