Hello,

Our full backups are now larger than we could fit on a single tape so we picked up an autoloader (HP A3716A.)

We are running HPUX 11.0

It's installed with an SE SCSI card (HP-PB 28642A) and ioscan shows the following

ext_bus 5 10/4/12 scsi1 CLAIMED INTERFACE HP 28655A - SE SCSI
ID=7
unknown -1 10/4/12.3 UNCLAIMED UNKNOWN HP C1537A
unknown -1 10/4/12.3.0 UNCLAIMED UNKNOWN HP C1537A
unknown -1 10/4/12.3.1 UNCLAIMED UNKNOWN HP C1557A
unknown -1 10/4/13 UNCLAIMED UNKNOWN HP 28655A - Parallel
Interface

what do I need to do to properly install this device and get it ready to use?

I have very little HPUX experience so, don't be afraid to keep any instructions idiot proof and hand holding is encouraged :)

Hmmm...I used to have some of those. IIRC, you need to make sure that driver "schgr" is in the kernel. Also driver "stape" and / or "tape2" (i think).

sam -> kernel configuration -> drivers.

I believe that was all I needed. that was on L-class running 11.0.

I don't recall if there were separate switch setrings for the changer and the drive or not. If they are separate, make sure they aren't the same instance number

The following is a good document I have used for HP-UX 11.0 and 11.11.

Configuring HP-UX For Peripherals: HP 9000 Computers:
http://docs.hp.com/en/B2355-90698/index.html

The sections you need are:

Selecting Device Drivers for a Tape Device and Interface:
http://docs.hp.com/en/B2355-90698/ch07s01.html

Configuring HP-UX for a Tape Drive:
http://docs.hp.com/en/B2355-90698/ch07s02.html

However if you have existing SCSI tape drives then you should already have those correct tape drivers on the machine.

It also seems strange that ioscan is finding a C1537A and C1557A. Do these drives exist on your system? If they don't - then maybe the A3716A is being recognised as a C1537A or C1557A?

Do you know if HP-UX 11.0 supports the A3716A or does it need a patch?
Jerry,

For Autoloader we need to make sure the scsi patches are all in

SCSI (c7XX)
PHKL_34186
FCMS
PHSS_23581
SCSI Pass-Thru (sctl)
PHKL_26398
Tape Driver (stape)
PHKL_35993

WK

For the tape drive you probably need to include the "tape2" driver into the kernel, because the HBA is HP-IB.
The robotics need "schgr", AFAIR.

I have loaded all the drivers suggested, but, the device is still unclaimed. I am going to try the patches, and will probably call hp because we have hardware and software support.

We currently have a single dds3 tape drive and I suspect that is why the device is being labeled incorrectly as a C1537A I am not sure where the C1557A came into play.

Thanks for the repsonses, I will keep trying to resolve the issue and update as the issue evolves.

AFAIR the tape2 driver cannot work with a dds3 or newer tape, but this is the only driver that works with your HP-IB card.

Bad news, I know.

For any HP-IB card the problem will remain, for HSC there are only F/W differential controllers - this won't work.

You can try to mount the DDS drive internally in the server.

ok, strictly from rather shaky memory, when I had this on the K box, it was attached to a HP 28696A Wide SCSI card, drivers stape and schgr required in kernel. (Note that this has been a number of years ago, so you may want to take this with a grain of salt)

worked on 10.20 and 11.0 w/o issue.

also, double check cables and terminators.

Unfortunately, that box, my docs and that employer all went away in a bankruptcy, or I'd check the config that it was running.
